Research Studies - Blood Sugar Control

  1. “Insulin Spray”

    (Study coordinator: Lenka Stepan)

A study using a new rapid-acting insulin spray for persons with type 1 diabetes. Insulin spray will be administered with meals. When tested, the insulin spray worked the same as injected insulin. Insulin spray is delivered as a fine spray to the mouth. This results in rapid insulin absorption through the lining of the mouth without any exposure to the lungs or the pain and inconvenience of needles.

  2. "Once-A-Week Injection Study"

    (Study coordinator: Yulia Abidova)

New research study for overweight patient with type 2 diabetes who take only 2 oral medications for sugar control and whose A1C result is above 7.0 %. This study involves once a week injection which might help with diabetes management and weight loss. During office visits, we will perform many tests including PET scan, EKGs, continuous glucose monitoring, etc. All tests, diabetes supplies and oral medications will be provided at no cost to participants.

  3. “All To Target”

    (Study coordinator: Yulia Abidova)

An insulin-start study comparing 2 different insulin regimens for type 2 diabetes. Medications, lab tests and office visits related to the study are provided at no cost.

  4. "ACCORD Trial"

(Study coordinators: Kathi Russell, Yulia Abidova)

Type 2 diabetes is a condition that is closely linked to obesity and places people who have the disease at greater risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). People with type 2 diabetes die of CVD at rates 2 to 4 times higher than those who do not have diabetes. They also experience more nonfatal heart attacks and strokes.
Grunberger Diabetes Institute is one of 70 clinics in the United States and Canada taking part in a major new study that is testing three approaches to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes. The Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study is being funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). ACCORD is designed to test the effects of intensive glycemia control, treatment to increase HDL-cholesterol and lower triglycerides, and of intensive blood pressure control on major CVD events .
10,251 participants are currently enrolled and follow-up is scheduled to continue until December 2009. More information about the ACCORD study can be found on the web at www.accordtrial.org.

  5. "Viaject" Study

    (Study coordinator: Kathi Russell)

A one-year study using a new rapid-acting insulin preparation (not on the market yet; ) with type 1 diabetes. This insulin preparation has shown in early studies even faster onset and shorter duration of action than the rapid-acting insulins Medications, lab tests and office visits related to the study are provided at no cost.
